Ether Struggles to Maintain $2,600 Resistance as Bulls Look to Options Expiry for Boost
Ether (ETH) is battling to stay above the crucial $2,600 resistance level following a 15.1% surge between Sept. 18 and Sept. 23. This rally was sparked by weakening macroeconomic data, which has led to increased demand for safe-haven assets like government bonds. Against this backdrop, traders are closely watching the upcoming $2.78 billion monthly Ether options expiry on Sept. 27, a key event that could either solidify or reverse Ether’s current bullish momentum.
Why Is Ether Price Gaining?
The recent uptick in Ether’s price can be largely attributed to the US Federal Reserve’s decision to signal a shift toward a more accommodative monetary policy, hinting at potential interest rate cuts. This has led to a rally in the broader stock market, with the S&P 500 hitting a new all-time high on Sept. 24.
Additionally, economic indicators like the S&P Global Manufacturing PMI, which dropped on Sept. 23, have increased concerns about the health of the U.S. economy. This, in turn, has prompted investors to flock to short-term government bonds, driving down US 2-year Treasury bond yields to their lowest point in two years. The combination of economic uncertainty and lower yields has made cryptocurrencies like Ether more attractive to investors as alternative, scarce assets.
The Bigger Picture: Ether’s Struggles
While Ether has experienced a recent bounce, it is still down 33% over the past four months. This decline follows the much-anticipated launch of a spot exchange-traded fund (ETF) in the U.S., which fell short of market expectations. The launch led to outflows of around $684 million, according to data from Farside Investors, putting additional downward pressure on Ether.
Despite the recent gains, Ether faces challenges, particularly from competing blockchain platforms like Solana and BNB Chain, both of which offer significantly lower transaction costs. Ether’s network fees have spiked recently, with the average transaction fee rising to $4.50 from just $1.45 in the span of ten days, as transaction activity surged 15% in the week leading up to Sept. 24.
Furthermore, Ether has seen an increase in supply. According to Ultrasound Money, 58,856.4 ETH has been added to the supply in the past 30 days, translating to an annualized inflation rate of 0.6%. This additional supply has raised concerns about Ether’s ability to reclaim the $3,000 level, especially with the competition from lower-cost alternatives.
Traders Await Ether Options Expiry
As the options expiry on Sept. 27 approaches, traders are analyzing potential outcomes that could impact Ether’s price. The $2.78 billion in open interest comprises $1.82 billion in call (buy) options and $0.95 billion in put (sell) options, indicating that bulls are in a favorable position. In particular, $1.47 billion of the call options target prices of $2,700 or higher. However, if Ether remains below that level by Sept. 27, these call options will expire worthless.
Although bulls have made strides in the recent price action, bears are not without leverage. A clearer opportunity for put options arises, particularly if Ether is unable to maintain its current support level of $2,600.
Most Likely Outcomes for Ether’s Options Expiry
The following scenarios provide an outlook on how the options expiry could unfold based on current Ether price trends:
- Between $2,400 and $2,500: This scenario would benefit put options by $225 million.
- Between $2,500 and $2,600: Put options would still hold the advantage, but by a slimmer margin of $100 million.
- Between $2,600 and $2,700: At this price range, call options start to gain the upper hand with a $70 million advantage.
- Between $2,700 and $2,800: In this case, call options would dominate, with a net advantage of $220 million.
For Ether bulls, pushing the price above $2,700 by the Sept. 27 deadline is crucial to securing a significant advantage. However, with the $2,600 support level being tested repeatedly, bears still have a strong chance of turning the tide in their favor.
Ether’s short-term price movement will largely depend on the outcome of the Sept. 27 options expiry. While bulls have made gains in recent weeks, the pressure is mounting as bears look to capitalize on any weakness below the $2,600 level. As the market anticipates the next move, the battle between call and put options will play a pivotal role in determining Ether’s near-term direction.
