Introduction
Ripple is a company. XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), a public blockchain. Those three labels are mashed together in headlines as if they were one ticker. They are not.
Ripple builds payments and stablecoin products that may use XRP, RLUSD, and other assets. The ledger is open-source infrastructure documented at xrpl.org. XRP can be held and transferred without using Ripple’s software. Confusing the three is how “Ripple news” and “XRP news” become a single rumor mill.
This article disambiguates the stack, covers the SEC case from primary documents (without inventing an ending the docket did not write), explains Ripple’s payments and RLUSD products from official pages, and treats XRP ETFs as a product class with at least some U.S. listings verifiable on EDGAR — not as a list of unverified tickers.
Key Takeaways
- Ripple (the company) ≠ XRP (the asset) ≠ XRPL (the ledger). Ripple’s own explainer is on ripple.com/xrp.
- XRPL launched in 2012; David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb, and Arthur Britto are named on Ripple’s history page as ledger creators. The company now known as Ripple was founded the same year. Ripple states that 80 billion XRP were gifted to the company to build use cases.
- XRPL uses a validator consensus protocol (Ripple currently describes it as Proof of Association). It is not Bitcoin-style mining and not Ethereum-style staking. Settlement is measured in seconds on the network’s own docs (xrpl.org).
- Ripple news is corporate: products, licenses, lawsuits, RLUSD. XRP news is the asset: listings, ETF products, market structure. Overlap exists because Ripple holds XRP and sells it under escrow policies the company discloses.
- The SEC case ended at the appellate level in August 2025 with both sides dismissing appeals. The district court’s final judgment — including a $125,035,150 penalty and a registration injunction — remains in effect per SEC Litigation Release 26369 (7 August 2025). Institutional vs programmatic sales were distinguished in 2023. That is not a statute declaring “XRP is never a security.”
- RLUSD (Ripple USD) is Ripple’s dollar-redeemable stablecoin, described on ripple.com as issued with NYDFS-supervised reserves (Standard Custody & Trust Company) and available on XRPL and Ethereum. Confirm current chains and attestations on Ripple’s transparency pages; do not import live circulating-supply figures into this evergreen article.
- U.S. spot XRP ETPs exist as a product class. For example, Bitwise’s XRP ETF shares (ticker XRP) were listed on NYSE Arca on 20 November 2025 per the trust’s SEC periodic report. Franklin’s product (XRPZ) began trading 24 November 2025 per its 10-K. Other issuers may list; verify each prospectus. An ETF share is not XRPL.
- Partnerships: only use what Ripple publishes on its official site or a regulator’s site.
- Check live XRP prices on CoinMarketCap or CoinGecko after confirming the asset. Ignore lookalike tickers.
Three names, three objects
Ripple’s XRP page uses this split:
| Name | What it is |
|---|---|
| XRP | Native token of XRPL. Pays fees, deters spam, can serve as a bridge asset on XRPL’s DEX. |
| XRP Ledger | Public layer-1 blockchain. Validators agree on transaction order every few seconds. Not owned by Ripple. |
| Ripple | A technology company whose products use XRP, RLUSD, and other digital assets. Also a large XRP holder and one of many XRPL contributors. |
xrpl.org answers “Is XRPL a private blockchain owned by Ripple?” with no. Protocol changes that affect transaction processing or consensus need supermajority approval from the network (xrpl.org cites an 80% threshold). Ripple operates a small minority of validators on the Unique Node List; the exact counts on that page will age — the structural point is that Ripple is a contributor, not the chain’s owner.
If a headline says “Ripple pumped 10%,” it probably means XRP. If it says “Ripple signed a bank,” it probably means the company — and may still be a press-release exaggeration.
Project identity
CoinMarketCap (XRP) | Ripple on XRP | XRPL docs | Ripple (company)
- Asset: XRP, native to XRPL
- Company: Ripple (various legal entities by jurisdiction)
- Stablecoin: RLUSD — not XRP
- Wrapped XRP: wXRP on other chains is a bridged representation with extra issuer/bridge risk. It is not native XRP.
There is no Ethereum contract for “canonical XRP.” IOU-style representations on XRPL are a different design (issued currencies) and are not this article’s focus.
What the XRP Ledger is
XRPL overview: a decentralized public blockchain “built for business.” Anyone can run software. Validators — servers anyone can operate in principle — agree on the order and outcome of transactions on a short interval (xrpl.org: three to five seconds). All conforming transactions are public.
Compared with Bitcoin, there is no energy-intensive mining contest. Compared with Ethereum, there is no general-purpose EVM as the center of gravity (though EVM sidechains and bridges exist in the wider ecosystem; treat those as separate systems). XRPL’s native features historically include a built-in decentralized exchange, issued currencies / trust lines, and later amendments (such as NFT and sidechain-related work) that must be read from current xrpl.org docs, not from a 2018 explainer.
UNLs (Unique Node Lists). Each server operator configures a list of validators it trusts not to collude. That is a different trust model from proof-of-work’s “follow the heaviest chain.” Critics call it federated; advocates call it practical consensus. Understand UNLs before describing the ledger as fully trustless or fully centralized.
What XRP does on XRPL
On-ledger, XRP:
- Pays transaction fees that are destroyed (anti-spam).
- Serves as a bridge in multi-currency payment paths on the DEX when no direct order book exists.
- Is held in accounts that must meet a reserve (a minimum XRP balance). Reserves change by amendment; look up the current protocol parameter rather than memorizing a number from a blog.
Ripple’s marketing emphasizes cross-border speed (on the order of seconds) and low fees. Those are protocol characteristics under normal load. They are not a guarantee of the XRP/USD exchange rate.
Supply and escrow. Ripple publishes quarterly figures for XRP it holds, XRP in on-ledger escrow, and XRP distributed. Those snapshots go stale immediately. As of 30 June 2026 Ripple’s own page listed large escrow and treasury balances; do not treat those digits as current. Read the latest quarterly report on ripple.com rather than copying a screenshot.
Total genesis supply is commonly stated as 100 billion XRP. Escrow was designed to pace how quickly Ripple can sell. Escrow unlocks are a supply-calendar story. They are not automatically a price forecast.
What Ripple the company sells
Ripple is a payments and digital-asset infrastructure firm. Official product families include:
- Ripple Payments — institutional cross-border movement using digital assets and local payout rails (payments overview).
- On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) — documented in Ripple’s developer docs as a way to source liquidity using digital assets (including XRP) instead of pre-funded nostro accounts. The operational flow involves exchanges, wallets, and contractual arrangements (including, in some setups, XRP pre-positioned under a commit-to-sell). This is enterprise software plus market structure, not a retail app.
- Ripple USD (RLUSD) — see below.
- Custody / mint interfaces for institutions (Ripple Mint is named on the stablecoin pages).
Ripple is also a venture and ecosystem participant (funds, hackathons, grants). Those are company activities. They do not make every XRPL token a Ripple product.
Ripple news vs XRP news
| Ripple news | XRP news |
|---|---|
| Product launches, licenses (NYDFS, DFSA as claimed on RLUSD pages), hires, lawsuits | Exchange listings, ETF/ETP flows, XRPL amendments, wallet exploits |
| Earnings or funding if disclosed | Market-maker and custody news for the asset |
| RLUSD attestations | DEX liquidity on XRPL |
A responsible desk labels the actor. Crypto business news is the method page for reading corporate claims. Crypto news literacy still applies: primary link or it did not happen.
XRP community media often treats every Ripple hire as bullish for the token. That is a sentiment pattern, not a cash-flow model.
The SEC case (verified status)
Filed: 22 December 2020, S.D.N.Y.
Theory: unregistered offers and sales of XRP as investment contracts.
District court (2023–2024): Judge Analisa Torres held that certain institutional sales were securities transactions under Howey, while certain programmatic exchange sales were not, on the factual record (buyers did not know they were buying from Ripple). Individual defendants’ scienter issues were litigated separately. A final judgment imposed a civil penalty of $125,035,150 on Ripple and an injunction against registration violations — figures taken from the SEC’s own later release.
Appeals: Both sides appealed. On 7 August 2025, Litigation Release 26369 announced a joint stipulation dismissing the Commission’s appeal and Ripple’s cross-appeal in the Second Circuit. The final judgment remains in effect. Each side bears its own costs per that resolution.
What this is not:
- Not a Supreme Court case about all tokens.
- Not a Commission rule that XRP is a commodity in every transaction forever.
- Not a $50 million “settlement” that replaced the $125 million penalty — that figure appears in some secondary articles and conflicts with the SEC release. If a modification exists, it needs a court order.
- Not legal advice for whether your XRP trades are securities transactions.
Ripple’s website states that a federal court ruled XRP is not a security and that XRP is classified as a digital commodity in the U.S. That is company language summarizing a mixed holding plus later market practice (ETPs, CME futures). The careful version is Torres’s transaction split plus the surviving injunction on Ripple’s own registration-violating sales. For the enforcement-history frame, see SEC vs cryptocurrency. For pending market-structure bills that might codify commodity vs security lines, see crypto politics — and do not claim the CLARITY Act is law unless Congress.gov says it became a Public Law.
RLUSD
Ripple USD is described by Ripple as a U.S. dollar–redeemable stablecoin, backed one-to-one by cash and cash equivalents (including Treasuries, in company wording), with segregated reserves.
Official points that can be sourced to Ripple:
- Issued with NYDFS oversight via Standard Custody & Trust Company, a New York limited-purpose trust (transparency page language).
- Ripple also cites DFSA approval in Dubai for the product.
- Native issuance on XRP Ledger and Ethereum; Ripple says other chains may be added.
- Monthly third-party attestations (see transparency).
- Institutional mint/redeem via Ripple Mint; retail access via exchanges Ripple lists.
Launch availability on named venues was announced for 17 December 2024 in a Ripple press release. Venue lists change; use Ripple’s current “where to find” page.
Do not confuse RLUSD with XRP. One is a supervised dollar token; the other is a volatile native asset. GENIUS Act (U.S. payment-stablecoin statute, P.L. 119-27) will sit in the background of all dollar tokens as it takes effect; that is federal policy, not a Ripple endorsement. Details: crypto politics. Circulating supply and reserve dollar amounts on the transparency dashboard are live figures; confirm them there rather than treating a snapshot as current.
Payments and On-Demand Liquidity
Ripple’s payments story is: convert fiat to a digital asset (XRP or a stablecoin), move it on XRPL in seconds, convert to local currency on the other side — reducing nostro pre-funding. Whether any corridor is cheaper than SWIFT-plus-FX for a given pair is an empirical, dated question. It is not proven by a tagline.
ODL documentation makes clear that exchanges and local rails are in the path. That reintroduces exchange, KYC, and liquidity risk even when the ledger settlement is fast. Institutional users sign contracts; retail XRP holders are not thereby customers of Ripple Payments.
Partnerships (official-only rule)
Crypto history is littered with “Ripple partnering with Bank X” stories that were pilots, expired MOUs, or vendor lists. Name a bank, PSP, or government as a partner only when it appears on Ripple’s current official site or a regulator’s site.
What can be said without a name-drop: Ripple sells to financial institutions; some integrations of RLUSD into Ripple Payments are described on product pages “in certain jurisdictions.” If you need a specific logo, go to ripple.com and treat even that as marketing until a filing or the counterparty confirms.
XRP ETFs as a product class
Spot XRP exchange-traded products give brokerage accounts price exposure to XRP held by a trust, minus fees — the same structural idea as crypto ETFs and ethereum ETFs.
Verified from SEC EDGAR (examples, not an exhaustive or ranked list):
- Bitwise XRP ETF, ticker XRP, NYSE Arca, listed 20 November 2025; S-1 effective 19 November 2025 (trust 10-Q description).
- Franklin XRP ETF, ticker XRPZ, NYSE Arca, trading from 24 November 2025 (trust 10-K).
Other issuers have filed or listed; tickers collide (the word “XRP” is both an asset and a fund symbol). Always match the prospectus. AUM, flows, and “best XRP ETF” rankings go stale; confirm them in current issuer materials if you need them.
Holding an XRP ETP does not give you an XRPL account, RLUSD, or Ripple equity.

Risks
- Asset volatility. XRP can move violently on lawsuit headlines that are already priced.
- Issuer overlap. Ripple’s escrow sales are a known supply factor; they are not a secret “dump” conspiracy by default, nor are they irrelevant.
- UNL / validator politics. Governance culture differs from Ethereum’s client diversity story and from Bitcoin’s miner story.
- Bridge and wrap risk. wXRP is not XRPL native settlement.
- Stablecoin risk. RLUSD has issuer, reserve, and redemption risk like any fiat token.
- Legal residual. The injunction binds Ripple’s conduct; your facts may differ.
- Scams. Fake “Ripple giveaways,” fake support agents, lookalike tickers.
Not a recommendation to buy XRP, RLUSD, Ripple private stock, or any XRP ETF.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Ripple?
A company that sells payments and digital-asset infrastructure and holds XRP. Website: ripple.com.
What is XRP?
The native asset of the XRP Ledger. It is not shares of Ripple.
What is the XRP Ledger?
A public blockchain with a validator consensus protocol. Docs: xrpl.org.
Is XRP a security?
U.S. law looks at transactions. The S.D.N.Y. court found some of Ripple’s institutional sales were unregistered securities transactions and some programmatic sales were not. Appeals were dropped in 2025; the judgment stands. That is not a global classification statute.
Did Ripple win the SEC case?
The case is over as an appeal. Ripple did not erase the penalty or the injunction. The SEC did not obtain a holding that all XRP secondary trades are securities. See LR-26369.
What is RLUSD?
Ripple’s USD stablecoin, NYDFS-supervised via Standard Custody per Ripple, issued on XRPL and Ethereum. Not XRP.
Is there an XRP ETF?
U.S. spot XRP ETPs have listed (examples: Bitwise ticker XRP; Franklin XRPZ). Confirm the fund on the exchange and in its prospectus rather than treating any recap as a complete roster.
Does buying XRP fund Ripple?
Only if you buy XRP from Ripple (or from someone recycling that inventory). Buying on an exchange is usually a secondary trade. Ripple’s treasury/escrow is still an overhang to understand.
Where is the XRP price?
CoinMarketCap — XRP or CoinGecko, after identity checks.
