Bitcoin (BTC) derivatives traders are charting new bearish territory, even with the price nearing its all-time highs. According to recent data from on-chain analytics platform CryptoQuant, Binance has recorded its largest-ever derivatives discount, signaling a notable shift in market sentiment. On January 24, derivatives on Binance traded at a significant $62.40 discount compared to the spot price, a rare occurrence in the market. This unprecedented gap highlights a growing divide between spot and derivatives trading activity, which CryptoQuant suggests is influenced by broader macroeconomic trends.

Bitcoin Derivatives Reflect Inflation Concerns

Despite trading just $5,000 shy of its all-time high, Bitcoin (BTC/USD) hasn’t managed to stir much excitement among derivatives traders. According to CryptoQuant, the gap between spot and derivatives pricing has hit a record level. On January 24, Bitcoin derivatives on Binance were trading $62.40 below the spot price—a dramatic divergence that CryptoQuant contributor Darkfost links to macroeconomic conditions.

“This shift in behavior among investors can be tied to recent U.S. economic data from the Federal Reserve, which pointed to projections for future rate cuts and inflation expectations,” Darkfost explained in a Quicktake blog post.

However, there’s hope on the horizon. “If the recent trend of better-than-expected inflation data continues, it could help rebuild investor confidence,” he added. Key economic indicators like the Consumer Price Index (CPI), Producer Price Index (PPI), and Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Index, along with employment reports, have been at the center of attention. The next big update—the PCE release—is due on January 31, just after the Fed’s decision on interest rates. Bitcoin’s price movement at the end of Q4 reflected this uncertainty, with BTC/USD repeatedly testing support near the $90,000 mark. The lack of confidence in the derivatives market signals hesitation to bet on short-term price moves. However, CryptoQuant highlights that this kind of environment is unusual for bull markets.

“Historically, in bull cycles, spot-perpetual price gaps tend to shrink and return to neutral territory,” Darkfost noted.

“When the gap widens to such extreme negative levels, it’s often a sign of a strong buying opportunity, as market sentiment typically overreacts before stabilizing.”

$90,000 BTC Price Support Remains ‘Critical’

CryptoQuant contributor Yonsei Dent has identified a surprising insight for Bitcoin speculators: $100,000 is not the key support level to watch. Instead, Dent points to a much lower threshold tied to short-term holders (STHs)—investors who have held Bitcoin for six months or less. Currently, STHs remain in profit as long as Bitcoin stays above $96,400. If BTC/USD dips below this mark, those holding for just a week to a month will begin to experience losses. The situation worsens slightly lower, with one- to three-month holders entering loss territory at $95,900. Dent notes that the average cost basis for all STHs sits just under $90,000, a level he considers a “critical support zone.”

“As volatility continues to tighten, the $89.9K level becomes increasingly significant,” Dent explained. “Any major price movement from here deserves close attention, as this level holds considerable weight both technically and on-chain.”

Conclusion:

The Bitcoin market is facing mixed sentiment as derivatives traders remain cautious, and Bitcoin continues to hover near all-time highs. Despite the bearish gap on Binance and concerns surrounding inflation, the $90,000 support level remains critical for Bitcoin’s price action. Traders and analysts are closely monitoring the upcoming macroeconomic data and any potential price movements, particularly the critical support levels that could determine Bitcoin’s next move.

FAQs:

Why is Bitcoin’s derivatives gap widening?
The widening gap between Bitcoin’s spot and derivatives prices on Binance is largely attributed to macroeconomic trends, such as inflation expectations and the Federal Reserve’s rate projections, which have caused uncertainty among derivatives traders.

What is the significance of the $90,000 support level?
The $90,000 support level is crucial for short-term holders (STHs) of Bitcoin, who are still in profit as long as the price stays above this level. Falling below $90,000 could lead to net losses for many investors.

Is the $100,000 support level important for Bitcoin?
While $100,000 is a key level, the $90,000 support level is considered more critical for short-term holders, and its movement will provide greater insight into the market’s potential direction.
