Thailand is witnessing a significant transformation in its digital assets market, moving from a retail-driven model to one that emphasizes institutional participation. This shift is crucial as the country aims to establish itself as Southeast Asia’s fintech hub, according to Binance Thailand’s CEO, Nirun Fuwattananukul.
Regulatory Developments
In an opinion article published in the Bangkok Post on October 25, Fuwattananukul highlighted the importance of recent regulatory changes by Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). On Oct. 9, The SEC proposed new regulations that would enable institutional-grade mutual and private funds to invest in cryptocurrency products, including U.S.-based spot crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs). He stated, “By facilitating the participation of more institutional funds, the SEC is promoting a variety of investment strategies and aiding in the wider acceptance of digital assets in mainstream finance.”
This initiative aims not just to legitimize Bitcoin but to create a more mature ecosystem in which traditional finance and crypto assets can coexist. The SEC’s new fund allocations primarily target high-net-worth investors, while retail access remains limited. Furthermore, the central bank continues to prohibit the use of cryptocurrencies for payments.
Emerging Trends and Future Outlook
Fuwattananukul indicated that the SEC is also exploring regulations for various crypto activities, although he did not provide specific details. He highlighted the growing trend of real-world asset (RWA) tokenization, where traditional banks are beginning to convert assets—such as bonds, real estate, and equities—into blockchain-tradeable digital forms. Research from Tren Finance suggests that the RWA tokenization sector could see up to 50 times growth by 2030.
Concluding his remarks, Fuwattananukul expressed confidence that the SEC’s updates will support Thailand’s evolution as a digital asset hub, providing a secure and dynamic ecosystem for all participants. Despite this institutional focus, retail crypto trading remains popular in Thailand, with Bitkub—the largest crypto exchange in the country—reporting approximately $33.5 million in daily trading volume, according to CoinGecko.
