Bitcoin’s All-Time High May Be Further Away, Despite Positive Sentiment

Bitcoin enthusiasts eager for a new all-time high (ATH) need to be more patient, according to recent data from onchain analytics platform, Santiment. While market sentiment is at its most bullish in months, experts caution that such optimism might delay significant price action.

Social Sentiment at Its Highest in Months

On September 30, Santiment released data suggesting that market sentiment around Bitcoin has been unusually high in recent weeks. The platform disclosed that there are now 1.8 bullish posts for each bearish post associated with Bitcoin. This shift marks a notable uptick in enthusiasm, with Bitcoin prices climbing steadily. From a low of $58,000 on September 17, Bitcoin surged 14% to top $66,000 on September 28 briefly.

Sentiment noted, however, that when the market becomes overwhelmingly optimistic, it can often signal a period of consolidation or slower growth. The report indicated, “Those hoping for a new all-time high for Bitcoin might need to wait until the public realign their expectations.”

Mainstream Media Catches Up

The positive shift in sentiment isn’t confined to the cryptocurrency community alone. Mainstream media outlets have also turned more favorably toward Bitcoin. Jameson Lopp, the Chief Security Officer at Casa, noted this trend in a September 29 tweet. He noted, “The sentiment surrounding Bitcoin is shifting positively in mainstream media as fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD) struggle to stay relevant.”

The change in sentiment comes after months of negative media coverage, driven largely by concerns over regulation and market volatility. With Bitcoin now on track for its best-ever September in terms of price gains, the narrative seems to be shifting.

The Bitcoin Fear and Greed Index: From Fear to Greed

Another key indicator of market sentiment is the Bitcoin Fear and Greed Index, which tracks emotions and attitudes in the cryptocurrency market. As of September 30, the index had returned to greed levels, with a score of 61. This stands in sharp contrast to earlier in the month when the index dropped to 22, indicating “extreme fear” on September 6.

The shift from fear to greed often signals increasing confidence among traders, but it can also serve as a cautionary tale. As greed takes hold, the potential for a market correction becomes more likely, suggesting that Bitcoin might not reach a new ATH as soon as some investors hope.

Global Market Factors Could Impact Bitcoin’s Trajectory

While sentiment in the West remains bullish, there are external factors that could slow Bitcoin’s progress toward a new ATH. For example, Cointelegraph reported on September 29 that demand for stablecoins in China has been bearish, which could delay Bitcoin’s price rise. When dollar-pegged stablecoins are sold at a discount in China, it often indicates a general bearish sentiment in one of the largest cryptocurrency markets globally.

Despite these headwinds, Bitcoin remains resilient. As of September 30, Bitcoin was trading at $64,406, approximately 12.6% below its all-time high of $73,734 set in March, according to CoinGecko.

Short-Term Pullback Expected

However, Bitcoin experienced a sharp pullback in early trading on September 30. Within six hours, the cryptocurrency’s price fell by almost 2%, raising questions about whether the market is primed for a deeper correction or merely taking a breather before the next rally.

For now, it seems that while sentiment is bullish, investors may need to temper their expectations. As Sentiment suggested, the path to a new Bitcoin ATH may require more patience, especially if the market needs time to digest its recent gains.
