Confidence in Bitcoin and the broader cryptocurrency market is rising among institutional investors, according to the latest Future Finance survey by Swiss crypto bank Sygnum. Released on November 14, the survey reveals a growing shift toward long-term crypto allocations. Many respondents plan to increase their exposure to digital assets, driven largely by clearer regulatory frameworks and the launch of U.S. Bitcoin Spot ETFs.

Institutional Appetite for Crypto Assets on the Rise

Sygnum’s annual survey gathered insights from 400 institutional investors across 27 countries, offering a comprehensive view of market sentiment. Notably, over half (57%) of respondents intend to raise their crypto allocations. About a third of these investors expect to do so within the next quarter, while another 32% plan for an increase within six months. This trend signals a growing risk appetite for crypto assets among institutions. Only 5% plan to decrease their crypto allocations, and just 2% remain undecided.

Martin Burgherr, Sygnum Bank’s chief clients officer, highlighted the role of recent regulatory advances in boosting market sentiment. He cited the approval of U.S. Bitcoin Spot ETFs as a catalyst, noting, “This has the potential to accelerate the institutional adoption of digital assets.”

Shift Toward Targeted Investments

Institutions are employing diverse strategies for boosting their crypto exposure. Nearly 44% of respondents are focusing on single-token investments, while 40% prefer actively managed portfolios. Meanwhile, 36% plan to maintain their current holdings, possibly waiting for ideal market conditions or further regulatory clarity before making additional moves.

As regulatory barriers lessen, other risks are emerging as primary concerns. Sygnum’s survey found that 81% of institutional investors now prioritize access to better crypto information. This shift suggests that security risks and market volatility are taking precedence over regulatory concerns.

Key Focus Areas: Layer-1 Solutions, Web3, and AI

Institutional investors currently favor scalable layer-1 solutions like Bitcoin, Solana, and stablecoins. Interest in Web3 infrastructure and Decentralized Physical Infrastructure (DePIN), which is powered by AI, is also gaining traction.

In contrast, enthusiasm for decentralized finance (DeFi) has waned. Frequent, high-value hacks in the DeFi space have led to an estimated $2.1 billion in losses, making investors more cautious.

Looking Ahead

Compared to 2023, institutions are moving away from real estate investments and turning toward equities, corporate bonds, and mutual funds. This shift suggests that crypto is increasingly seen as a viable asset class within traditional portfolios. As regulatory clarity improves and institutional frameworks evolve, the crypto landscape may witness even more substantial institutional participation in the coming years.
