Sky Mavis, the company behind the Web3 game Axie Infinity and the Ronin blockchain, has announced a significant workforce reduction, laying off 21% of its staff. Co-founder and CEO Trung Nguyen described the move as a strategic realignment aimed at achieving long-term growth, not a reflection of financial instability or employee performance.

In a post on X, Nguyen clarified the rationale:

“It is a shift in priorities aimed at aligning our resources with our long-term vision.”

Nguyen also assured that all impacted employees would receive severance packages and support to transition into new opportunities.

Strategic Focus on New Axie Game and Ronin Expansion

Sky Mavis plans to channel its resources into several initiatives, including a new Axie Infinity game. While Nguyen did not elaborate on this project, he highlighted that the company’s focus would now include the Ronin Wallet, the Mavis Marketplace, Web3 game publishing, and expanding the Ronin Network.

“This decision isn’t tied to the company’s financial status. Instead, it’s a strategic step to better position Sky Mavis for rapid growth in 2025 and beyond,” Nguyen said.

The layoffs aim to streamline operations, making the company more agile and better equipped to achieve its ambitious goals.

Decline in Axie Infinity Tokens and NFTs

Despite Nguyen’s assurances, the value of Axie Infinity’s blockchain assets has significantly declined from their peak.

  • Axie Infinity’s NFTs, known as “Axies,” had a floor price of over $700 in 2022 but now sit at approximately $0.33, according to DappRadar.
  • The AXS token, which once traded at an all-time high of $164.90 in 2021, has dropped to $8.07.
  • Similarly, the Smooth Love Potion (SLP) token fell from its peak of $0.39 in 2021 to just $0.0036.

Meanwhile, the Ronin blockchain’s native token RON performed relatively well in 2024, reaching an all-time high of $4.45 in March. However, it currently trades at $1.77.

Community and Industry Response

The layoffs, though strategic, come amid a broader conversation about the sustainability of Web3 gaming and blockchain-based assets. The Axie Infinity ecosystem has faced challenges in maintaining the high valuations seen during the 2021 and 2022 crypto booms.

Sky Mavis’ renewed focus on innovation and product development may be a turning point for the company. By doubling down on its core projects and launching new initiatives, Sky Mavis hopes to reclaim its position as a leader in the Web3 gaming space.

As the crypto industry evolves, all eyes will be on Sky Mavis to see if its strategic shift can reignite interest in Axie Infinity and its associated blockchain assets.
