Solana has recently gained significant traction, capturing nearly half of the decentralized exchange (DEX) market. This growth has been largely fueled by the memecoin platform Pump.fun, which has surpassed Ethereum’s network in trading volume in recent weeks, according to crypto exchange OKX. In its January 28 The State of DEXs 2025 report, OKX attributes Solana’s rise in DEX dominance to its “blazing transaction speeds, minimal costs, and developer-centric tools.” The report suggests that Solana is “drinking the Ethereum milkshake,” referencing Solana’s brief 89.7% market share in the last week of December, a share that has remained above 50% over the past five weeks, according to Dune Analytics data. OKX claims that Solana’s DEX market dominance can be sustained despite the highly variable volumes seen on platforms like Pump.fun. “Solana blows every other chain out of the park” by nearly all measures, OKX said, highlighting Solana’s advantages in transaction fees, transaction count, active wallet addresses, and active DEX users.

“Solana is truly the retail chain,” OKX continued.

The Solana-native DEX, Jupiter, has been a key contributor to the blockchain’s growth, accounting for nearly 70% of its DEX volume. OKX praised Jupiter for its optimized slippage management, accurate real-time pricing data, and efforts to minimize platform risks. A significant portion of Solana’s recent DEX volume came from the memecoins launched by US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania just ahead of his inauguration on January 20. These memecoins saw a combined market cap surpassing $20 billion at their peak. Despite Solana’s growing share in the DEX market, OKX noted that Ethereum and its layer 2 solutions continue to dominate in terms of weekly volume per address and average trade size, suggesting that larger investors, or “whales,” remain more active on Ethereum. Ethereum has tokenized 82% of over $5 billion worth of real-world assets on blockchains, while Solana holds just a 2.5% share, according to Dune Analytics and 21Shares data. OKX also pointed out that Ethereum continues to lead in liquidity pool quality due to its size in total value locked (TVL), whereas Solana’s liquidity remains much smaller.

“Whether Solana’s low TVL, high-volume model is a temporary anomaly or a sign of resilience will depend on how it adapts to market shifts and continues to attract liquidity and development,” OKX concluded. Ethereum continues to be the foundation for innovation in decentralized finance, but some of its layer 2 solutions are now starting to compete with Solana’s fast transactions and low fees.

Conclusion:

Solana’s remarkable rise in DEX market share, largely attributed to its speed, low costs, and platforms like Pump.fun, is creating notable competition for Ethereum. While Solana holds an edge in certain areas, Ethereum’s established presence in decentralized finance and liquidity pools continues to make it a formidable player. Whether Solana can maintain its momentum or whether the future holds more balance between the two will depend on its ability to evolve and attract sustained liquidity.
