In a concerning development for the blockchain community, Truflation, a platform providing real-time economic and inflation data, confirmed on September 25 that it was targeted in a malware attack, resulting in estimated losses of up to $5.2 million.
“The Truflation team detected some abnormal activity. An attacker launched an attack using malware,” the company shared in a recent post on X (formerly Twitter). The team is currently monitoring the situation closely and has implemented protective measures to safeguard the remaining funds. They are collaborating with “leading industry partners” and law enforcement agencies to address the breach.
Details of the Attack
The attack has led to significant losses from Truflation’s treasury multi-signature wallets and personal wallets on Ethereum, with blockchain analyst ZachXBT estimating the total damage at approximately $5.23 million. A separate assessment by the blockchain security firm Cyvers pegged the losses slightly lower at $4.95 million.
Specifically, around $3.89 million in Truflation’s native token (TRUF), $1.07 million in Ether (ETH), and $236,000 in Dai (DAI) stablecoin were reported stolen from the team’s Ethereum wallets. However, Truflation has assured its users that no customer funds were compromised in the breach, and its staking funds remain unaffected.
Response and Future Steps
In response to the attack, Truflation’s team is not only focusing on damage control but is also attempting to establish communication with the hacker, indicating a willingness to negotiate. They have shown a willingness to reward “white hat” hackers who help identify and recover the lost funds.
The incident has caused a notable impact on the TRUF token’s value, which dropped 15.6% to $0.068 shortly after the news broke, before partially recovering to $0.073. The token’s market capitalization is currently approximately $12.8 million.
About Truflation
Launched in December 2021, Truflation is backed by prominent investors, including Coinbase Ventures and Chainlink. The platform not only provides crucial inflation data but also opened a data marketplace tracking various commodity indexes, including sugar, cocoa, coffee, cattle, petroleum, and wheat, approximately ten months after its inception.
As Truflation navigates this challenging situation, the broader blockchain community is watching closely, underscoring the importance of robust cybersecurity measures in the ever-evolving digital landscape.
