A landfill site in Newport, Wales, believed to hold a hard drive containing 8,000 Bitcoin, is reportedly nearing closure. The landfill, located east of Cardiff, is expected to shut down in the 2025-26 financial year, according to a report from BBC News on February 9.

A spokesperson for the Newport council stated that the site, operational since the early 2000s, is approaching the end of its lifecycle. Plans are already underway for its closure and capping, with part of the land earmarked for a solar farm project approved in August.

A Decade-Long Bitcoin Battle

The landfill gained global attention as the focal point of IT worker James Howells’ mission to recover a hard drive he accidentally discarded in 2013. The device is believed to hold 8,000 BTC, mined in 2009, now valued at approximately $768 million. Howells’ partner reportedly threw out the drive, unaware of its contents.

For nearly a decade, Howells has been in a legal standoff with Newport council, seeking permission to excavate the site. He even proposed sharing a portion of the Bitcoin’s value with the council if the recovery was successful. However, his legal efforts came to an end in January when a judge dismissed the case, citing no reasonable chance of success.

Environmental Concerns Halt Excavation

Despite assurances from Howells that advanced AI technology could locate the hard drive without public funding or additional costs to the council, his request to excavate the landfill was repeatedly denied. The council pointed to significant environmental concerns, stating that any excavation would pose a considerable ecological risk to the surrounding area.

The Broader Context of Lost Bitcoin

The 8,000 BTC believed to be on the lost drive represents only a fraction of the estimated 3 million Bitcoins permanently inaccessible due to lost keys or discarded storage devices. This accounts for approximately 13% of the total Bitcoin supply.

Some experts, including Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino, suggest that advancements in quantum computing could eventually unlock Bitcoin from lost wallets, potentially reintroducing a significant portion of these coins into circulation. However, this raises concerns about the potential impact on Bitcoin’s market dynamics.

The Future of the Site

While Howells’ battle to recover his Bitcoin has come to an end, Newport council has its sights set on a greener future. Plans for a solar farm on the site signal a shift toward sustainability, bringing a close to the landfill’s controversial legacy.
