Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined his vision for the blockchain’s future in the next phase of its roadmap, known as “The Surge.” This phase aims to push Ethereum’s capacity to over 100,000 transactions per second (TPS) and improve layer-2 (L2) network interoperability.
In a blog post on Oct. 17, Buterin emphasized the importance of unifying the Ethereum ecosystem. “Ethereum should function as a single ecosystem, rather than 34 separate blockchains,” Buterin wrote, highlighting the fragmented state of Layer 2 networks. While Ethereum’s rollup-centric roadmap has shown promise, he acknowledged the challenges it has introduced.
Solving Ethereum’s Scaling Challenges
Vitalik Buterin’s focus on the future of Ethereum highlights ongoing efforts to resolve key technical challenges. The Dencun upgrade in March — a combination of the Shanghai and Cancun-Deneb updates — helped reduce transaction fees and introduced “blobs” for cheaper data on L2s. However, critics argue that L2 solutions could detract from Ethereum’s mainnet, leading to security concerns and making the native Ether token inflationary.
Buterin proposed improvements in data availability sampling, better data compression, and the development of trustless L2 networks. “Ethereum needs trustless rollups so that some L2s can inherit Ethereum’s core properties,” he said, stressing the importance of maintaining security and decentralization.
Scaling Ethereum’s Base Chain
Beyond L2 advancements, Buterin also emphasized the need to scale Ethereum’s main chain (L1). “If L2s become very scalable and successful but L1 remains capable of processing only a deficient volume of transactions, there are many risks to Ethereum that might arise,” he cautioned. One proposed solution involves increasing the gas limit, but Buterin noted that this could lead to centralization risks due to higher costs for stakers.
Enhancing User Experience
Buterin’s blog post also touched on user experience, particularly the need for seamless interactions between Ethereum’s L2 networks.“If we truly believe that Layer 2s are part of Ethereum, we must ensure that using the L2 ecosystem feels like interacting with a unified Ethereum network,” he stated. he said. The goal is to allow users to send tokens between different L2s without the hassle of manually bridging or converting them into native tokens to pay for gas.
Buterin’s vision for Ethereum’s next steps revolves around scaling while preserving its decentralized core, marking a significant shift from earlier plans for sharding. “Our current task is to complete the rollup-centric roadmap,” he concluded, emphasizing the need to resolve these technical challenges to ensure Ethereum’s long-term success.
