Early Life and Education

Mira Murati was born in 1988 in Vlorë, Albania. At 16, she moved from Albania to Canada, where she attended Pearson College UWC on Vancouver Island, graduating with an International Baccalaureate diploma in 2007. She pursued her undergraduate studies at Colby College in Maine on a Davis-UWC Scholarship, participating in a dual degree program in engineering with Dartmouth College. In 2012, she earned a Bachelor of Engineering in mechanical engineering from Dartmouth and a Bachelor of Arts from Colby​​​​​​.

Professional Career

Murati’s career began as an intern at Goldman Sachs in 2011. She then worked at Zodiac Aerospace before spending three years at Tesla as a senior product manager for the Model X. Following her tenure at Tesla, she joined Leap Motion​​. In 2018, she joined OpenAI, where she eventually became the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), leading the company’s work on ChatGPT, DALL-E, and Codex, and overseeing research, product, and safety teams​​.

Leadership at OpenAI

As CTO of OpenAI, Murati was instrumental in the development and delivery of groundbreaking products like ChatGPT and DALL-E. She functioned as the company’s head of operations, ensuring timely development of ChatGPT, managing the relationship with Microsoft (an investor and partner of OpenAI), and shaping AI policy in Washington and Europe. She played a pivotal role in executing decisions across the company and was responsible for distributing DALL-E and ChatGPT​​.
