Positive news in the war against crypto crime: Web sleuth ZachXBT began freezing some of the funds in a massive Bitcoin heist valued at $330 million that occurred last month.
First Success in the Hunt
ZachXBT is a seasoned blockchain investigator who operates under a pseudonym. Yesterday, he said they’d been able to freeze around $28 million’s worth of plundered Bitcoin from a number of top trading venues. This marks the first substantial move toward reversing funds from what specialists are labeling as being one of 2025’s most ingenious crypto hacks.
.
“We’ve collaborated with several exchanges and law enforcement to freeze the initial batch of stolen funds,” ZachXBT tweeted. “This is only the start of a complicated process that will likely take months to complete.”
The robbery occurred on April 25 and involved several rich Bitcoin holders via what appears to be an elaborate scam operation that also possibly included stealing private keys (the secret codes that manage Bitcoin wallets). The robbers stole close to 5,400 BTC, which was around $330 million at the time of the robbery.
How They’re Following the Money
ZachXBT’s research demonstrates how crypto forensics specialists are improving at following the money through the blockchain (the electronic ledger that tracks all Bitcoin transactions). The thieves first divided the stolen Bitcoin into hundreds of tiny transfers in an attempt to cover their trail, a method commonly referred to as “peeling” or “chain-hopping.”
“We’re witnessing a traditional money-laundering scheme, but on a scale we’ve not witnessed previously,” said the head of our Blockchain Intelligence Unit. “The scammers are attempting to conceal the origin of the funds using several decentralized exchanges, cross-chain bridges, and mixers.”
In spite of these efforts to trace over their steps, ZachXBT and a group of volunteer blockchain analysts managed to track large portions of the stolen funds as they passed from service to service and ultimately to centralized exchanges. These exchanges are required to have ID checks (KYC), which allows for suspicious accounts to be frozen.
Exchanges Helping with Recovery
Some cryptocurrency exchanges have helped out in this case by freezing suspicious deposits that correspond to patterns of stolen money.
As reported by Elliptic, an organization that assists in monitoring suspicious crypto transactions, the success of freezing these first funds indicates how the cryptocurrency security community is becoming more effective in combating theft.
“Five years ago, it would have been all but impossible to recover money from a theft of this magnitude,” said Sarah Johnson of Elliptic. “Today, the pairing of sophisticated blockchain tracking technology with improved collaboration between exchanges makes it much more difficult for crypto thieves.”
Hope for the Victims
About 20 major Bitcoin holders were affected by the theft, and most have stayed anonymous. One victim, who spoke to reporters but didn’t want to be named, feels cautiously hopeful about getting their money back.
“When the theft occurred, I assumed that money was lost forever,” said the victim, who was allegedly robbed of more than 300 Bitcoin in the assault. “ZachXBT’s efforts give me hope that at least part of it will be recovered.”
Recovering stolen cryptocurrency is still tricky, even if funds are detected and frozen. The legal path to recovering assets varies across different countries, and the global scope of **crypto crime** will often complicate enforcement.
What This Means for Crypto Security
This high-profile case reflects how blockchain security and tracking mechanisms are improving. As Bitcoin Magazine reports, this case represents significant progress in stealing back cryptocurrency.
“What we’re witnessing is cryptocurrency security maturing,” explained Thomas Chen, a digital asset security researcher who Bitcoin Magazine interviewed. “The openness of public blockchains, along with improved tracking tools, means that large-scale thefts are increasingly risky for thieves.”
Experts point out that as the cryptocurrency market expands, security and recovery tools also become more robust. Large exchanges now employ specialist security teams and collaborate closely with global blockchain analysis firms and law enforcement agencies.
What Happens Next
ZachXBT has indicated that this is only the tip of the iceberg of a much more extensive recovery effort. Although $28 million is below 10% of the overall stolen funds, the tracking efforts are bearing fruit.
“The blockchain does not forget, and we will continue monitoring these funds for years if necessary,” ZachXBT said. “This should serve as a warning to anyone considering such thefts. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to steal crypto without being caught.”
Authorities in several countries are said to be participating in the investigation, although officials withhold details so as not to undermine their current efforts.
To the crypto community, the case is at once a caution that there is no substitute for proper security practices and a welcome indication that recovery techniques are getting better at combating digital asset thievery.
