Ethereum (ETH) has experienced a surge in fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD) recently, while its price against Bitcoin (BTC) has hit its lowest level in over three years. The downturn is partially attributed to competition from other blockchains, particularly Solana (SOL), which has gained approximately 17% over the past week amid a broader shift in investor interest.

According to data from Oct. 24, Solana has surged nearly 600% against Ethereum since 2023, fueled largely by the recent popularity of memecoins. With Solana’s market cap standing at $82 billion, some analysts are speculating whether it could one day compete with Ethereum’s $300 billion market cap, though it still has significant ground to cover.

Market Reactions and Developer Responses

As of Oct. 24, ETH’s price ratio with BTC has dropped to 0.037, marking its lowest level since April 2021. ETH recently fell about 9% from a two-month high of $2,760 on Oct. 21, dropping below $2,500. In contrast, BTC’s value has rebounded, reaching $68,820.

Ethereum core developer Eric Connor dismissed criticisms about layer-2 scaling, liquidity fragmentation, and development speed. He emphasized Ethereum’s commitment to decentralization and noted that it remains the leading smart contract platform. “Ethereum is a multi-decade play,” he commented, expressing confidence in Ethereum’s long-term potential.

Other community voices echoed this sentiment, attributing current criticisms to ETH’s recent underperformance. Ethereum advocate Anthony Sassano pointed out that market sentiment often mirrors ETH’s price fluctuations, noting, “It just seems like these complaints only arise when ETH is trading weakly.”

Long-Term Outlook

Ethereum’s developers and advocates remain focused on the blockchain’s long-term prospects, despite the recent rise of competitors. Meanwhile, Solana supporters, such as Helius founder Mert Mumtaz, have expressed continued support for Ethereum’s ecosystem, underscoring the blockchain’s foundational role in the decentralized finance (DeFi) landscape.
