Airdrop Claims Boost Blob Fees on Ethereum’s Scroll Network

A recent spike in airdrop claims for the new Ethereum layer-2 network Scroll has pushed blob fees to a four-month high of $4.52. This marks the third significant fee increase since Ethereum’s Dencun upgrade in March.

On Oct. 22, pseudonymous crypto data analyst Hildobby posted on X, attributing the spike in blob fees to the Scroll airdrop. Scroll launched its governance token, SCR, on Binance and distributed it to users on the same day. Data from Dune Analytics shows that the increase in blob fees indicates heightened market activity driven by airdrop participants.

Historical Context of Blob Fee Increases

This surge in blob fees is not new. Similar spikes occurred in July during a notable increase in layer-2 activity and again on March 27 with the launch of Blobscriptions. This protocol allows users to inscribe data directly onto blobs. While elevated blob fees can benefit Ethereum by increasing gas revenue, they also inflate the costs of executing transactions and transfers on Ethereum layer-2 solutions.

Temporary Nature of the Fee Spike

Fortunately for users, the spike in blob fees was short-lived. Activity across layer-2 networks began to decline, causing fees to settle near zero at the time of publication. This volatility highlights the delicate balance of Ethereum’s fee structure, particularly during busy periods.

Concerns Over Blob Capacity

Just weeks before this latest surge, Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum co-founder, expressed concerns about the “blob count.” He noted that the maximum number of blobs available per block was nearing full capacity. If developers do not address this issue, it could hinder Ethereum’s scalability.

In reaction to this, Ethereum developers presented a new Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) on October 18. EIP-7742 proposes a dynamic mechanism for setting blob gas targets and maximum values. This proposal aims to optimize transactions and enhance network scalability ahead of the upcoming Pectra fork.

Benefits of Blobs and Proto-Danksharding

Developers implemented blobs in the Dencun upgrade to help lower transaction costs on Ethereum layer-2 networks. Since their implementation, transaction fees have plummeted. For example, swap fees on Arbitrum dropped from approximately $1.25 to below $0.02, while Polygon fees saw a similar decline.

Moreover, Ethereum developer Dan Cline famously inscribed the entire Bee Movie script onto the Ethereum mainnet for just $14. This example showcases the cost-saving potential of blobs as temporary data storage units.
