In the latest development surrounding the FTX cryptocurrency exchange scandal, Ryan Salame, a former executive of FTX, is set to admit to criminal charges. This comes as a precursor to the trial against the exchange’s founder, set to kick off next month.

Salame, who once jointly spearheaded FTX’s main Bahamian division, FTX Digital Markets, will become the fourth top executive from the beleaguered company to reach an agreement with the prosecution.

The legal actions against Salame are a segment of the broader case pointing at SBF, the FTX founder accused of masterminding a fraud scheme worth billions of dollars. Authorities contend that SBF misappropriated funds from FTX customers, redirecting them for personal expenses, speculative investments, and even political contributions. Salame, having once been in the inner circle of SBF, had previously alerted Bahamian authorities about the misuse of FTX’s funds to offset losses at the associated trading company, Alameda Research.

Caroline Ellison, Nishad Singh, and Gary Wang, three high-ranking FTX officials, have already admitted to fraud-related charges and are likely to provide testimonies against SBF. Ellison, with past leadership roles at FTX’s partner firm Alameda Research and a personal relationship history with SBF, is poised to be a central witness in the forthcoming trial.

As for SBF, he’s presently incarcerated at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn and has faced numerous hurdles in building his defense. An appeal for his release was recently denied, with claims regarding limited access to required medications and insufficient time to scrutinize evidence against him. Despite the mounting challenges, SBF has consistently maintained his innocence, pleading not guilty to all accusations. His detainment under house arrest has been ongoing since his extradition from the Bahamas in the previous December.
