Polish authorities arrested Dmitry Vasiliev, a Russian national associated with the collapsed WEX cryptocurrency exchange, on charges of fraud and money laundering. He was detained on December 6 as part of an international effort to bring him to justice for allegedly running one of the world’s largest crypto exchanges.

Vasiliev, the ex-CEO of WEX, was arrested by Poland’s elite “Shadow Hunters” unit from the Central Bureau of Police Investigation (CBŚP). Police arrested him at his apartment in Warsaw’s Wola district following a U.S. extradition request. According to Krzysztof Wrześniowski, a CBŚP spokesperson, Vasiliev faces multiple charges related to his role in criminal activities at WEX.

WEX’s Collapse and the $450 Million Scandal

Vasiliev led WEX when the exchange collapsed in 2018, allegedly losing $450 million of customer funds. WEX replaced BTC-e, which closed after an FBI investigation into international money laundering. Following BTC-e’s shutdown, Vasiliev and others took control of WEX. However, the exchange eventually failed as it lost substantial funds.

Alexey Bilyuchenko, the actual operator behind WEX, was a former partner of Alexander Vinnik from BTC-e. Funded by Russian millionaire Konstantin Malofeyev, WEX collapsed in 2018. Bilyuchenko claimed that Russian authorities coerced him into sending funds to a wallet controlled by the Federal Security Service (FSB). Despite these claims, Bilyuchenko was detained by Russian authorities in 2022 for his part in WEX’s downfall.

U.S. Extradition Request and Potential Legal Consequences

U.S. authorities have now filed an extradition request for Vasiliev. If the courts approve, he could face up to 20 years in prison for his involvement in the WEX fraud and money laundering activities. This case underscores the growing global efforts to hold those involved in illicit cryptocurrency activities accountable.

The arrest also highlights the increasing legal challenges in the cryptocurrency industry. As law enforcement agencies worldwide focus more on uncovering illegal practices in digital currencies, the case serves as a reminder of the sector’s legal risks.
