Pump.fun, a decentralized platform that lets users create and promote Solana-based tokens, is facing scrutiny after reports of disturbing livestream content. Users have allegedly broadcast harmful and violent acts, leading to calls for stricter moderation or even the shutdown of the platform’s livestream feature.
The platform, which encourages livestream promotion, is now at the center of controversy. Several alarming incidents have raised concerns about Pump.fun’s responsibility to ensure user safety and prevent dangerous behavior.
Disturbing Livestreams Spark Outrage
The first major incident occurred on Nov. 25, when an X (formerly Twitter) user named Beau, a project manager at Pudgy Penguins Safety, flagged a livestream on Pump.fun. In the broadcast, a user threatened to take their own life unless their token reached a specific market cap. Beau urged Pump.fun to intervene, disable the livestream, and offer support to the individual in distress.
This was followed by multiple disturbing reports, including threats of violence during livestreams. In one instance, a user allegedly claimed to be shot outside a window every time their token’s value increased. In another case, a child threatened to harm their family if the token did not reach a certain price target. More troubling was a report of a user threatening to shoot up a school unless their token “pumped.” These incidents led many in the crypto community to call Pump.fun’s livestream feature a “pipeline of felonies.”
Calls for Stricter Moderation or Shutdown of Livestream Feature
In response to these incidents, many users are demanding that Pump.fun implement stricter moderation or deactivate its livestream feature until more safeguards are in place. One user on X urged the platform to shut down livestreams, stating that showcasing “depravity” is neither “noble” nor “novel.”
The community’s concerns reflect growing doubts about the platform’s ability to handle harmful content. While Pump.fun has added various features to help users promote their tokens, the lack of adequate safeguards has caused some users to lose confidence, arguing that Pump.fun needs to act quickly.
Pump.fun’s Response: Defending Moderation Efforts
In response to the backlash, Alon, the pseudonymous leader of Pump.fun, defended the platform’s moderation efforts. He stated that a large team of moderators works around the clock to oversee content, including images, videos, livestreams, and comments. He emphasized that moderation has been a priority since the platform’s launch.
Alon stated, “We have a dedicated team of moderators working 24/7, along with an internal engineering team, to manage the growing volume of tokens, streams, and comments.”
Despite these reassurances, many users remain dissatisfied with the current level of moderation. They are calling for more transparency and asking for immediate changes to prevent harmful broadcasts.
What’s Next for Pump.fun?
While Pump.fun has acknowledged the concerns of its users, it has yet to outline specific steps for addressing the livestream issues. The debate over moderation and user safety continues, with many wondering if additional safeguards will be implemented.
As the crypto space evolves, content moderation on decentralized platforms like Pump.fun will remain a key topic. For now, the platform faces pressure to balance creative freedom with user safety. The crypto community, aware of the risks of unregulated online content, will closely watch how Pump.fun responds.
