The Russian Central Bank has made significant strides in reducing illegal peer-to-peer (P2P) cryptocurrency transactions. A recent report by Odaily reveals that the number of high-risk P2P transactions has dropped by 2.8 times compared to 2023. This highlights the bank’s ongoing efforts to tighten control over the decentralized crypto market.

Progress in Reducing High-Risk Transactions

In its latest financial stability assessment for Q2 and Q3 of 2024, the Russian Central Bank revealed a substantial decline in high-risk P2P transactions. This follows coordinated efforts with commercial banks to block illegal activities linked to P2P platforms.

Although new crypto laws were introduced in 2024, the market remains largely unregulated. These laws do not address the core issue of exchange regulation, leaving much of the market to operate in a decentralized and sometimes hidden manner. Many companies, claiming to facilitate cross-border transfers with crypto, contribute to the expansion of the P2P market.

Challenges in the Decentralized Market

The decentralized nature of Russia’s crypto market makes regulation difficult. Underground exchanges and P2P operators often use fictitious identities or fake accounts to avoid detection. The central bank has focused on blocking these transactions through partnerships with credit institutions. By doing so, they have prevented many illegal crypto transactions.

A cybersecurity report from June 2023 revealed that Russian traders conduct transactions worth up to $296 million daily. This rapid growth in P2P trading raises concerns about the country’s financial security.

Surge in Traffic to Global Crypto Platforms

Alongside efforts to curb illegal transactions, the Russian Central Bank noted a sharp increase in Russian visitors to global cryptocurrency platforms. Traffic from Russian IP addresses rose by 56.5%, totaling 166.9 million visits. These visitors now make up 7.5% of all traffic to major global exchanges, marking a 1.3% increase from the previous report.

Decline in Crypto Wallet Holdings

The Russian Central Bank also reported a 16% decrease in cryptocurrency holdings on exchanges in Q3 of 2024, compared to March. Russian crypto wallets now hold about $6.1 billion, with 69% in Bitcoin, 21% in Ethereum, and 10% in stablecoins. This decline could indicate increased caution among Russian traders amid growing regulatory scrutiny.

A Growing Need for Stronger Regulations

Despite progress in reducing illegal P2P transactions, challenges in regulating decentralized markets underscore the need for stronger legislation. As the crypto market grows, both in Russia and globally, more robust regulations are essential to protect investors and ensure financial stability.

The Russian Central Bank’s efforts, along with support from commercial banks, signal a continued commitment to curbing illegal cryptocurrency activities. However, the rise in traffic to global crypto platforms and the growth of decentralized operations highlight that this remains an ongoing battle for transparency and regulation.
