Coinbase users in Europe are voicing frustration after the exchange announced it would discontinue its USDC yield program. The decision affects users in the European Economic Area (EEA) and stems from new regulations under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework.
Program Termination Details
In a November 28 email, Coinbase informed users that the USDC rewards program would end on December 1 due to MiCA laws. Eligible users can still earn rewards until November 30. The EEA, comprising all 27 EU member states, Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein, is directly impacted by this change.
MiCA’s Impact on Stablecoins
MiCA, effective since June 2023, introduces stringent rules for crypto firms and stablecoin issuers. It prohibits offering interest or rewards on stablecoins, which are categorized as “e-money tokens.” Coinbase and Circle, the issuer of USDC, must fully comply with these regulations by December 30, 2023.
Ripple CTO David Schwartz criticized the law, stating, “It’s funny how often regulations prevent companies from doing things that are unarguably pro-consumer.” Similarly,
Paul Berg, co-founder of Sablier, sarcastically remarked on X, “Very grateful to the EU for protecting me against earning a yield on my USDC holdings on Coinbase.”
Shifts in Europe’s Stablecoin Market
MiCA’s strict framework has led some companies to pull back from the European market. Tether, the issuer of USDT, announced on November 27 that it would phase out its euro-pegged stablecoin, citing regulatory hurdles.
However, other firms are stepping up. Schuman Financial, led by former Binance executives, plans to launch a euro-pegged stablecoin called EURØP in the coming weeks. This move signals that some players are willing to navigate Europe’s evolving regulatory landscape.
User Reactions Reflect Growing Frustration
The decision to terminate Coinbase’s USDC rewards program has left users disappointed. Mikko Ohtamaa, co-founder of Trading Strategy, shared his frustration in a satirical post, while others criticized the regulations for restricting consumer benefits.
As the December 30 compliance deadline approaches, crypto firms face mounting pressure to align with MiCA. The full impact of these regulations will likely shape the future of stablecoins and crypto innovation across Europe.
